This book is based on a true story and includes actual events. The heroine is Isabel Bilton, an army officer’s daughter, who goes to London to seek a career performing on stage. She is joined by her sister Flo and the two sisters become a sensation. Ms. O’Connor has definitely done her research and I loved the description of Belle’s life, and life in general, in late 19th C London. The author has a lovely way with words, with wonderful descriptive passages and unique word usage. I also enjoyed the author’s note at the end summarizing what happened to the main characters in real life.
However, despite my admiration of O’Connor’s ability, the pacing was dreadfully slow, with superfluous scenes and dialogue and I found myself skipping through page after page. Having said that, I get that the author had to work in actual events which would limit her ability somewhat to advance the plot so perhaps the slow pace is something that wouldn’t bother another reader.
